The Ever-Evolving World of Science
Class 7 Science β Curiosity
Easy Chapter Notes
π Chapter at a Glance
Science is not only about remembering facts. It is a way of thinking, asking questions, observing the world, doing experiments and discovering how things work.
What is Science?
Science is an ongoing process of discovery. It begins with curiosity. We observe something, ask questions, perform activities or experiments, and use what we observe to understand the world better.
- Science encourages us to ask questions.
- Science helps us investigate the unknown.
- Experiments help us test our ideas.
- New discoveries can lead to new questions.
Learning Takes Flight
The textbook uses the playful flight of a butterfly and a paper plane in its page numbers. This represents how learning can take flight when curiosity leads the way.
Simple observations and experiments about flight helped humans develop better understanding of flying machines.
Science is Everywhere
Science covers things that are small and large, near and far. We can study tiny cells inside a leaf, the movement of the Sun and stars, materials around us, water underground and many other natural phenomena.
Think Like a Scientist
In Grade 7, we learn to ask deeper questions such as:
- How do things work?
- Why do events happen the way they do?
- What can we learn from patterns in nature?
Why Activities and Experiments Matter
Science becomes easier to understand when we observe things ourselves and perform activities. Experiments help us test ideas and develop deeper understanding.
Even when an experiment gives the result we expected, it may lead to another interesting question. That question may require another experiment.
π Science is Connected
Different branches of science may look separate, but they are connected. Ideas from one area of science can help us understand or investigate another area.
This chapter introduces ideas connected with physics, chemistry, biology and Earth sciences.
Materials Around Us
We often use materials without thinking about their properties. Science encourages us to ask questions about them.
For example, we may wonder why some fruits taste sour or what happens when a haldi stain is washed.
Electricity and Materials
Batteries, lamps and wires can be used to investigate the properties of different materials.
We can ask which materials allow a lamp to glow and use their properties to classify materials.
Changes Around Us
Many changes happen around us. Some changes can be reversed while others cannot be reversed.
- Ice melts into water.
- Fruits ripen.
- Rocks can break into pebbles.
- Batteries eventually run out.
Heat and Changes
Heating can cause some changes or make changes happen faster. Heat can flow from one place to another.
Examples include the melting of an ice cube and the melting of glaciers.
Water in Nature
Water is found everywhere. Heat from the Sun causes water to evaporate from seas and other water bodies. It later falls as rain and may enter the ground.
Life Processes in Animals
Our bodies change as we grow. Animals need important life processes to survive.
- We need food for growth and energy.
- We breathe.
- Blood carries nutrients around the body.
Life Processes in Plants
Plants also need food to grow. This raises important scientific questions: How do plants get their food? Do plants breathe? How do they do it?
Time and Motion
We use clocks and watches to measure time. But humans were measuring time long before modern clocks existed.
Early humans observed shadows and used their positions in sunlight to tell the time.
Light and Shadows
Light helps us see. Shadows can also provide useful information. People have used shadows to understand time.
Light and shadows are also connected with fascinating events involving the Earth, Moon and Sun, including eclipses.
Earth, Moon and Sun
To understand day and night and eclipses, we need to understand the movements of the Earth and Moon and the Earth’s movement around the Sun.
- The Earth rotates around its axis.
- The Moon moves around the Earth.
- The Earth moves around the Sun.
Key Idea
Curiosity β Question β Observation β Experiment β Understanding β New Questions
This is one of the important ideas behind scientific exploration.
Activity 1.1: Question the Answer
In this activity, we are given answers and have to create interesting, creative and curious questions that could lead to those answers.
The purpose is to practise thinking like a scientist and asking interesting questions.
Questions
Answer: Because the catβs teeth were crooked.
Question: ________________________________________________?
Answer: Just add some milk.
Question:β________________________________________________?
Answer: Donβt panic, I have my towel.
Question:β________________________________________________?
Answer: 42
Question:β________________________________________________?
